All bets are off for gambling, horse racing and casinos in Hainan

Refuting earlier media reports, a local Hainan official has stated that there are no plans to build a casino on the island.

Ms Kang, deputy director-general of Hainan's Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, told The Straits Times in an interview on Wednesday that "No, there is no plan for a casino."

Her refutal came after the province's leader reported that the government would not allow gambling or horse-racing on the island.

Back in May 2018, in an interview with the South China Morning Post, Mr Su Guojing, founder of the China Lottery Industry Salon and an industry expert, stated that "It's almost impossible for Beijing to allow the building of physical casinos.... Casinos (are) against the overall ideology and the rules and laws of China."
