A deep-sea expedition team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), set sail from Sanya City in south China’s Hainan Province on Sunday to carry out manned submersible deep-sea dives.
The 60 members of the expedition team, named Shenyuan, were chosen from a number of Chinese scientific research institutions, universities, as well as enterprises and public institutions.
In June 2016 China conducted the first comprehensive 10,000-meter-deep sea exploration with self-developed high-tech equipment and realized the first unmanned deep dive to a depth of 11,000-meters.
The 94-meter Tansuo-1, with 60 scientific researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences on board, finished 84 missions during its 52-day voyage.
It set out from south China’s city of Sanya in June and explored the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench in the Pacific.
