Mayday holidays are coming, people want to travel and Sanya is shaping up to be one of the hottest destinations this year.
The upcoming May Day holidays is expected to see up to 200 million people on the move all across China, according to industry experts.
Bookings for air tickets, hotels and scenic spots have jumped significantly from 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic, with the total number of tourists expected to exceed 2019 levels and hit 200 million, according to a report from Trip.com.
According to the report airline bookings were up 23 percent compared with 2019, and economy-class tickets were sold out for many routes.
Shanghai, Beijing, Sanya and Guangzhou are looking like the most popular destinations.
As of yesterday, economy-class seats for flights on April 30 and May 1 from Beijing to Sanya were sold out, and only business-class tickets costing as much as 10,000 yuan ($1,532) are still available, according to online travel agency platform Qunar.
As of Wednesday, the number of people booking intra-provincial group tours on Trip.com for May Day surged six times from the same period in April.
