More than 2,000 budding young footballers from across China are in Hainan this week for the inaugural edition of the Mission Hills Haikou Cup.
A staggering 128 junior teams are taking part in the nine-day competition, making it the largest youth football event ever to be staged on the tropical Chinese island of Hainan.
Hosted by Mission Hills Haikou at its 20-pitch football training base, the final will be played on February 1. The tournament for seven to 14-year-olds is being supported by the Hainan Football Association and the Haikou Culture and Sports Bureau.
The 20-square-kilometre Mission Hills Haikou resort is also home to a FC Barcelona Academy – the only overseas academy to be wholly-managed by the world's most popular football club – and a recently-opened 'Barca Experience' visitor centre, the first in the world outside of the Spanish capital.
