The Hainan authorities have announced an investment of 417 million Yuan (approximately $59 million). The planned investment is to create a world-class geopark on the island, chinanews.com wrote on Saturday.
According to the news outlet, the tourist zone will occupy about 108 square kilometers. There will be at least 46 special infrastructure facilities built for tourists. The geopark is located 15 km southwest of of Haikou City and already a popular tourist destination.
Local government is accepting proposals and suggestions regarding the project up until the start of May.
“This will be a tourist Mecca for volcano enthusiasts”, said a representative from the local authorities.
“The project has great potential and will play an important part in the economic development of areas surrounding Haikou to the south.”
According to statistics, there are more than 100 extinct volcanoes on the Island, 86 of which are quite large.
These geological formations are located in the northern part of the island within the Haikou region. There are also formations near the cities of Wenchang, Danzhou and Qionghai as well as in the districts of Dingan, Chengmai and Lingao.
There are more than 4,000 square kilometers of volcanic mountains in the region. Which is enough space to create a world-class geopark on the island.
