Kevin Davidson director of China Golf Experience, CGE 

As CGE prepare to bring close to 200 golfing enthusiasts to Hainan, one of Asia's premier golfing locations, we interviewed company director, Kevin Davidson as part of our CEO interview series to find out what makes him tick. Winner of the prestigious Mission Hills Haikou, 2015 top golf tour operator award for outstanding quality and service, their stated aim is to, "develop spectacular golfing experiences by offering a selection of the best championship golf courses combined with impeccable Chinese hospitality and an array of luxurious accommodation options set in the heart of China’s golfing paradise".

Q: Give me one word that describes you best.

A: Thoughtful.

Q: What are your two most important goals at the moment?

A: Continue to build our international golf business and,

Q: Tell me something I don’t already know about the golfing industry in Hainan

A: Hainan is a paradise for courses which provide the "wow!" factor, and that's an incredible attraction for international golfers

Q: How do you see your company changing in two years, and how do you see yourself creating that change?

A: We will expand our global reach to bring more international golfers to China in general and Hainan in particular through effective use of social media, the web, TripAdvisor, personal referrals and building CGE into a company that people love to do business with.

Q: What is the last thing you’ve learned on the job?

A: How to engage with Instagram


Q: What has been your proudest accomplishment?

A: Building a national Australian company that was recognized for its products and customer service to the point it became a very attractive business for an ASX top 100 listed company to purchase.

iagtoCGE is a member of IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators) which is the global trade organisation for the golf tourism industry.

Q: What other CEOs / directors do you look up to and why?

A: Any CEO that runs a small business and has to fight hard every day to provide excellence in customer service and build good profitable companies.


Q: Tell me 3 things you like and 3 things you dislike about your current position.

A: I like:

Being able to do business from any location and having the technology to respond to any requests and to respond quickly

Bringing our Australian and international customers to China to enjoy sensational golf and to understand Chinese culture

I dislike:

Losing business to other suppliers based on just a small difference in price though we know they don't provide the service

Q: What has been the biggest let down in your career so far?

A: Nothing.


Q: What animal are you most like, and why?

A: Dolphin - I'm inquisitive, work in a team or individually, I'm generally happy, take initiative, caring and protective.


Q: If I called your previous boss and asked what one thing irritated them about you, what would they say?

A: I have basically been my own boss all my life but if there was one thing that might irritate people is my desire to determine the true situation after checking all sides rather than either assuming or rushing in to a conclusion.

Q: Tell me something that's true that almost nobody agrees with you on.

A: That customers should be at the top of the org chart and the board and CEO at the bottom as they need to make sure the foundations are strong so the rest of the team can ensure total customer satisfaction.

Q: If you were interviewed again a year from now celebrating what a great twelve months you’ve just had, what would you say you would have achieved?

A: The goals I set out above.


Q: If you had a magic wand and could have any job you want, what would it be? 

A: The one I have now.


Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?

A: That business on Hainan will improve and become more attractive to international guests as people working on the island in the service sector come to understood what makes up great customer service, and more locals speak some basic English and are accepting of those visitors.
