Big shift in China’s mobile tech landscape: MIIT has approved commercial eSIM trials for smartphones across China Mobile, Unicom, and Telecom. No more physical SIM cards, users can now activate plans remotely on supported devices like the new iPhone Air (China’s first SIM slot–free iPhone).

eSIM means slimmer devices, easier travel, and faster carrier switching, but the rollout’s still in early days, with activation requiring an in-person visit for now.
