City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is widely recognized as an innovative hub for research and professional education.
In January 2020, CityU signed the collaboration agreements with the Dongguan government and the Dongguan University of Technology for the establishment of CityU (Dongguan), an independent legal entity, within the Songshan Lake High-Tech Zone.
Adjacent to the CityU (Dongguan) campus, several exceptional innovation resources can be found. These include the China Spallation Neutron Source, the South Advanced Light Source Platform, Advanced Attosecond Lasers, the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, Huawei and other new R&D institutions and high-tech enterprises.

English serves as the primary language for instruction and administration at the University. The Dean’s appointment will be on a concurrent basis for an initial term of approximately three years.
1. Duties
1.1 Duties for College Dean
The Dean will offer visionary leadership to the College, aligning with the University’s mission and Strategic Plan. Collaborating with the College’s faculty and other academic units, the Dean is expected to enhance the College’s academic excellence in research and professional education and bolster its international reputation.
Key Responsibilities:
– Contribute to the University’s strategic development through planning and policy development at a university-wide level.
– Provide vision and leadership for the College, fostering advancement in teaching and scholarship.
– Collaborate with faculty to identify new research opportunities for the College and guide its growth and development.
– Lead on fiscal management, faculty development, and the administration of the College.
– Encourage innovation by delivering degree programmes of the highest standard while embracing new directions, ideas, and opportunities.
– Act as a key liaison between the College and the external community, playing an active role in strengthening the College’s external relationships.
– Foster interdisciplinary collaborations within the College and across the campus.
1.2 Duties for Department Head
The Department Head will be tasked with providing leadership and strategic direction in research, professional education, and steering the department in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan.
Key Responsibilities:
-Craft a forward-thinking vision for the Department that aligns with the University’s mission and strategic plan;
-Lead and manage the Department within the University’s faculty structure;
-Guide faculty and staff to develop ambitious academic programmes that enhance the student experience and bloster the University’s academic standing;
-Implement a structure that promotes high standards of research, knowledge transfer, and student learning at local and international levels;
-Act as a key liaison between the University and the external community.
2. Qualifications
2.1 Qualifications for College Dean
We’re looking for candidates who have:
– A doctoral degree, strong academic and professional qualifications, a distinguished record of teaching, research, and scholarship, and substantial relevant experience in academic leadership roles;
– Experience in representing a university effectively, with attention to a broad range of constituents, external bodies, and the public.
– Experience in building and sustaining strong ties to a wide corporate and NGO network for programme development.
In addition, we value candidates who possess:
– Strategic thinking and planning skills, coupled with strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork;
– Ability to provide a vision for the College and to build on and expand the College’s strengths;
– Ability to attract, motivate and retain distinguished faculty members;
– Outstanding management skills suitable for an international environment, with the capacity to foster a shared sense of ownership, collegiality, and enthusiasm among faculty and staff members.
– Strong communication and networking skills to build and nurture internal and external contacts to the benefit of the College and the University, leveraging these connections for the advancement of the College and its programmes.
2.2 Qualifications for Department Head
We’re looking for candidates who have:
– A distinguished record of research, teaching, and scholarship, along with substantial experience in tertiary education;
– Proven professional excellence, management experience, and effective leadership that fosters high standards of scholarship;
– A doctoral degree and robust academic and professional qualifications.
In addition, we value candidates who possess:
– A strong professional stature that commands respect from faculty members, community stakeholders, professional bodies, and government advisory bodies;
– The ability to attract, motivate, and retain distinguished faculty members.
– Exceptional management effectiveness and a commitment to teamwork;
