As the May Day holiday approaches, many travelers are heading to Hainan’s beaches, towns, and scenic spots. But with thousands hitting the roads, congestion is inevitable, unless you plan ahead.
The Hainan Provincial Highway Administration has released a guide to help drivers avoid the worst bottlenecks. Here’s what you need to know to make your May trip smooth, scenic, and stress-free.
1. Avoid Peak Hours
Smart timing is everything. If you can, steer clear of these predicted high-traffic windows:
Leaving Haikou:
April 30, around 5 PM
May 1, from 9 AM to 12 PM
Expect expressway entrances around Haikou to be especially crowded, with slower movement and heavy congestion.
Returning from your trip:
May 4–5, between 4 PM and 8 PM
Traffic volume will spike as travelers head home across the island. On the return trip, with everyone returning in a concentrated manner, the highway will become even more crowded.
Tip: Adjust your plans to travel earlier or later than the following peak periods. A few hours can make a big difference.

2. Take Alternative Routes (And Find Hidden Gems)
Hainan’s road network is constantly improving, and sometimes the best path isn’t the most obvious one.
If you’re heading to eastern Sanya, consider this alternate route:
Take the G9811 Hai-San Expressway,
Switch onto the Shanhai Expressway,
Exit early at Baoting and continue via local highways.
This route often offers lighter traffic, better road conditions, and a chance to see lesser-known natural beauty along the way. You might stumble across hidden waterfalls, mountain views, or charming villages.
Before setting off, check a navigation app for live traffic updates. Sometimes a slightly longer drive saves you hours of sitting still.
3. Refuel, Recharge, and Watch for Construction
Parts of Hainan’s highways will be under construction during the holiday, which could slow things down even further.
Before you go:
Refuel or recharge your vehicle fully to avoid emergencies in slow-moving areas.
Plan for detours: If construction zones are unavoidable, following the posted detour could actually be faster than braving a jammed-up work zone.
When passing through construction areas, drive carefully, follow signs, and listen to on-site traffic staff. A little patience goes a long way toward a safer, smoother trip.

Final Advice: Plan Early, Travel Smart
We would like to remind all drivers:
Plan your trip in advance.
Depart early when possible.
Keep an eye on live traffic conditions.
With a little preparation, you can spend less time in traffic and more time enjoying Hainan’s beautiful beaches, towns, and scenery.
Have a safe and happy May Day holiday!
