Hainan is in the middle of its typical summer climate pattern, with July bringing high heat, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and an increased risk of tropical cyclones. According to the Hainan Emergency Management Department’s July 2025 disaster risk report, between one and two typhoons are expected to affect the province this month.
High Rainfall and Storm Activity

Rainfall across the island is forecast to exceed seasonal averages, with total precipitation between 200 mm and 400 mm. The northern, central, and eastern parts of Hainan may experience periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms, throughout July. These events could be accompanied by short-term downpours, lightning, and strong gusts, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

Yellow thunderstorm warnings are common in Haikou during July, when warm, humid conditions fuel frequent afternoon storms. These warnings signal the risk of lightning, sudden strong winds, and short bursts of heavy rain.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity during storm periods and to tie down or move indoors any items that could be blown over or damaged by strong winds, such as umbrellas, loose equipment etc.
Typhoon Outlook

While the likelihood of a severe typhoon making direct landfall remains low, the province could still be affected by typhoon-induced rainfall and coastal hazards. Forecasts suggest two hazardous wave events exceeding 4 meters in the South China Sea, as well as the potential for a storm surge along parts of the coast.
Temperature Trends
July temperatures across Hainan are expected to range from 27°C to 31°C on average, with daily highs possibly reaching 34–38°C, particularly in the north and west. This is slightly higher than usual, with a projected increase of 0.4°C to 0.6°C above long-term averages. Periods of extreme heat (≥35°C) are likely to occur in the latter half of the month.
Marine and Coastal Conditions
The Hainan Meteorological Service has highlighted increased risks of coastal flooding and geological hazards, especially from July 23–26, when astronomical high tides are expected near Haikou Xiuying and Dongfang stations.
Daily Weather Forecast Highlights (Haikou & Surrounding Areas)
July 8–10: Cloudy with afternoon thunderstorms, temperatures between 25–34°C, local gusts up to 8 Beaufort scale during storms.
July 9–13: Northern areas expected to see frequent thunderstorms, with risk of short bursts of heavy rain and strong winds.
July’s weather in Hainan is unstable but typical for this time of year. Residents and visitors are advised to monitor official forecasts, prepare for afternoon storms, and follow safety guidance, especially if planning coastal or maritime activities.
