During the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival in 2022, fireworks and firecrackers will be banned in certain areas across Haikou.
The Haikou Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment is urging the general public not to buy or set off fireworks and firecrackers.
Instead of fireworks, they are urged use more environmentally friendly methods to celebrate such as electronic firecrackers, festive music, hanging lanterns, and placing flowers.
Traditionally fireworks are launched at midnight on New Year’s Day to celebrate the new year and scare off any evil spirits.
They are also launched during Lantern Festival to celebrate the end of Chinese New Year, ward off misfortune and bring in good luck.
