Foreign professionals in China may have money sitting in a Housing Provident Fund account that they will never see again simply because nobody told them it was there or how to claim it.

If your employer enrolled you in the scheme, a portion of your salary and a matching employer contribution has been going into a dedicated account every month.

When you leave China permanently, you are entitled to withdraw the full balance. The process involves your employer, the local Housing Provident Fund Management Centre, and a specific set of documents including your passport, work permit cancellation, and proof of departure.

The window to claim closes, and once you are back home the process becomes significantly harder to complete remotely.

Did you know your Housing Provident Fund balance before you read this? And has anyone successfully claimed it after already leaving China? We'd love to hear from you.
