Yangpu Bay is about to get a major facelift

In March 2022, Chapman Taylor won a design competition to masterplan Yangpu Bay. The project aims to create a smart city with a mix of uses as well as a sponge city to reflect the natural landscape, and a thriving waterfront inspired by Hainan culture.

Area: 5.21 km2

Status: Masterplan Concept Stage

The area was historically famous for its salt production, with local people having a rich history and connection with both the land and sea. The coastline in the area is covered with mangroves.

According to Chapman Taylor, the design concept first analysed how to protect birdlife and wetlands, proposing an ecological buffer zone. The coastline will become colourful and flood-adapted, with different site elevations to create a high-quality coastal urban form.

Five urban hubs

The goal is to have a modern and distinctive smart city. There will be five kinds of urban hubs: commercial, residential, research & developmental, and ecological.

Each hub will introduce green to the city, enhancing the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature and creating valuable public space. The area will have several core buildings including landmarks such as a Free Trade Building and an Entertainment Centre. Cultural buildings include a Community Centre and Innovation & Entrepreneurship Base.

According to the architects, there will be a multi-layered area containing buildings of different uses, including for business and cultural innovation, with the aim of creating a strong, ecological, open, multi-functional, habitable and viable urban space. This area is designed to serve the development and further construction of the city; a new model of city-industry integration with high-quality public services.
