Mr. Luo Jun, Commander of Yalong Bay Fire Station from the Sanya Fire Rescue Detachment won first place in the male coconut climbing competition with a time of 9.62 seconds.
The lightning fast climb took place during a competition held over the Hainan, San yue san traditional folk festival, which came to a close this week.
Luo Jun said that he participates in the competition every year and he is quite confident in the competition. Climbing coconut trees not only entertains, is a good workout but also exercise his skills.
Luo’s climb took only 9.62 seconds and another well-known sporting achievement around this mark is Usain Bolt’s, men’s world record for the 100-meter sprint at 9.58 seconds.
Coconut tree climbing competitions are common during the festival and it’s also pretty popular across Hainan, especially in Wenchang which is one of the largest producers of coconuts on the island.
Aside from climbing the trees to grab a few coconuts, it has become an important part of the local culture and has been included in traditional minority sports events across Hainan province.
The new coconut tree climbing champion of this year’s festival took first place at the San yue san celebrations held at the Tianya, Haijiao scenic area in Sanya.
The event was organized by Sanya Municipal Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports.
