New traffic points adjustments come into effect from today

The latest measures tackling road safety come into effect from today (April 1). The new rules have adjusted a number of traffic violations and the penalty points system for illegal road acts.

Speeding rules relaxed

Motor vehicles driving <20% over the speed limit. (Fine changed from 3 points to 0 points).

Motor vehicles driving 20% – 50% over the speed limit on expressways and urban roads (6 points).

Motor vehicles driving more than 50% of the speed limit on expressways and urban roads (12 points).

School buses, medium-sized or above passenger and cargo vehicles, and dangerous goods transport vehicles driving more than 50% of the specified speed on roads other than highways and urban expressways will be converted from 12 points to 9 points.

The points and speeds are calculated based on the current legal maximum speed limit of 120km/h on the expressway section, after the implementation of the new regulations, the maximum speed limit on the expressway section can be 143km/h without violation of license points.

Individuals seeking economic benefits and accepting traffic violation punishments and license violation points on behalf of the actual motor vehicle driver (12 points).

Reduced points

Driving a motor vehicle without giving way to a school bus (6 points reduced to 3 points).

Driving a motorcycle without wearing a safety helmet (2 points adjusted to 1 point).

When driving a motor vehicle on the road, the driver of the motor vehicle fails to wear a seat belt as required (1 point).

Driving a motor vehicle in violation of the prohibition signs and prohibition markings (3 points reduced to 1 point)

The number plate has not been hung in accordance with the regulations (12 points to 3 points).

Failing to have a car examined within the prescribed time (yearly car check) 1 point.

Points are no longer given for these actions

Renewing a motor vehicle driver’s license by concealment or deception.

Driving a motor vehicle that is prohibited from entering the expressway onto the expressway.

Driving a motor vehicle through an intersection and failing to drive or stop in accordance with regulations.

Not carrying a vehicle driver’s license, insurance documents, or inspection signs in the vehicle.

Upgraded penalty points

Driving a passenger automobile with seven seats or more in which the number of passengers exceeds the authorized number by more than 50% but less than 100%. Raised from 6 points to 9.

Parking illegally park on a highway or urban expressway will be increased (6 points to 9 points).

Driving a motor vehicle whilst making and answering hand-held phones that hinder safe driving will be increased from (2 points to 3 points).
