The vehicle integrates cutting-edge technologies, based on artificial intelligence, 5G, edge computing, big data and C-V2X for autonomous driving and HMI (human-machine interface) functions.

The autonomous driving bus for this trial ride is a 12-seat L4 autonomous vehicle with a speed of 40 km per hour, which is classified as “highly autonomous driving”.

The bus can independently change lanes to avoid pedestrians and other vehicles, brake or detour when it detects obstacles and slow down automatically when it enters traffic flow.

The bus sensors, cameras and GPS technology allow it to react to unexpected events, although the driver has the power to take over.

With the launch of this project, the Haikou Jiangdong New Area has become an urban laboratory for important autonomous vehicle tests.

In having the first standard-sized autonomous bus that is circulating under real conditions, the Jiangdong New Area reinforces its commitment to sustainable mobility and using new technologies for transport.

“The implementation and use of autonomous driving buses will further improve the high-quality and shared public service system in Jiangdong New Area and build an innovative and comprehensive transportation system that is led by green transportation” said a JDNA spokesperson.

According to a spokesperson in charge of smart city development the autonomous driving buses are an innovative measure in the field of the smart transportation.

The autonomous functions enables the vehicle to have the ability to drive on open roads. The HMI products meet the requirements of human-computer interaction in autonomous driving and increases interaction with passengers, security officers and passers-by.

Along the route, the vehicles stop one by one at the bus stations and the stop time is set according to passenger flow. Each bus is equipped with a safety officer to take charge of safety emergency operation.

The demonstration area of Baiju Avenue is equipped with RTK (Real – time kinematic) differential positioning base station, RSU road measuring unit, magnetic spikes and other facilities to support autonomous driving technology, which provides an important foundation for public transport autonomous driving.

The autonomous buses mark the development of a “low-carbon, and technology-oriented future” smart city in the Jiangdong New Area.
