A new tropical depression formed yesterday (Sept 16) east of the Philippines. As of 2 p.m., its center was located about 300 km east-northeast of Manila. Winds near the center are reaching Force 7 (around 15 m/s).
The system is moving north-northwest at about 15 km/h and is expected to gradually strengthen. Forecasters say it could become this year’s 17th named typhoon as early as today (Sept 17).
By the 18th, it’s likely to enter the northeastern part of the South China Sea, possibly reaching severe tropical storm strength before edging closer to the Guangdong coast.
For Hainan, tomorrow’s forecast is cloudy to overcast with periods of rain. While the storm isn’t on a direct path to the island just yet, its development is expected to influence local conditions over the coming days.
Authorities are reminding people to stay alert, keep track of updates, and take precautions as the system strengthens.
