Hainan announced the deployment of its first 10-gigabit optical network pilot in Lingshui. Thanks to a collaboration between Hainan Unicom and ZTE, this cutting-edge project has set the stage for faster, more reliable internet connections across the province—and it’s just the beginning.

On-site tests in Lingshui showed jaw-dropping results: both upload and download speeds surpassed 10,000 Mbps. For comparison, this is 5-10 times faster than the current gigabit networks many of us use. Imagine sending a 1-gigabyte file—about the size of a full-length movie—in just one second!
The breakthrough was achieved in the Lingshui Li’an International Education Innovation Pilot Zone, a key area chosen to showcase the potential of ultra-high-speed networks. The pilot marks a step forward in China’s plan to upgrade its communications infrastructure, following an announcement by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in early 2025. The MIIT initiative aims to expand 10-gigabit networks in areas like residential communities, factories, and industrial parks by the end of the year.
What is a 10-Gigabit Optical Network?
In simple terms, a 10-gigabit optical network is like a superhighway for digital data. It uses advanced fiber-optic technology to send and receive massive amounts of information at lightning-fast speeds. Hainan’s pilot leverages next-generation 50G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology, which provides ultra-large bandwidth, ultra-low latency (minimal delay), and incredible reliability.
Why Does This Matter?
This isn’t just about faster internet; it’s about transforming how we live, work, and learn. The initial focus in Lingshui is on education, where the high-speed network will power activities like live-streaming 4K and 8K ultra-high-definition classes and enabling immersive VR and MR (virtual and mixed reality) teaching experiences.
The benefits extend far beyond classrooms.
Industries such as data centers, enterprise networks, and even intelligent transportation systems stand to gain. Hainan’s new network is poised to meet the growing demand for high-performance connections in smart cities, smart manufacturing, and the industrial Internet. It’s a key step in the region’s digital transformation and economic growth.
What’s Next?
This pilot deployment in Lingshui is just the start. With the foundation now laid, the next phase will slowly see the expansion of 10-gigabit networks across Hainan Province. As the rest of China shifts from gigabit to 10-gigabit speeds, Hainan’s early success positions it as a leader in this new era of connectivity.
