Haikou School Closure Status During Typhoon Wutip

Haikou’s kindergartens are closed today (Friday, June 13, 2025) due to Typhoon Wutip’s impact on Hainan Island. According to the latest Chinese-language sources, Haikou City, along with Ding’an and Tunchang counties, upgraded their typhoon warnings from blue to yellow on June 12th afternoon.

Haikou-Specific School Closure Details

Kindergartens Only: Based on Hainan Province’s official typhoon response protocols, Haikou has implemented kindergarten closures under the typhoon yellow warning status. Under the provincial guidelines established in 2025, kindergartens must close when typhoon yellow warnings or higher are issued, while primary and secondary schools only close under orange warnings or above.

Current Warning Level: Haikou issued a typhoon yellow warning signal on June 12th afternoon, which automatically triggers kindergarten closures but allows middle and primary schools to remain open.

Schools Closed Across Hainan Island

While Haikou has only closed kindergartens, other areas of Hainan have more extensive closures:

Cities with orange warnings: Sanya, Dongfang, Wanning, and Danzhou have upgraded to orange typhoon warnings, requiring all schools (kindergartens, primary, secondary, and universities) to close.

Counties with comprehensive closures: Changjiang, Ledong, Qionghai counties have closed all educational levels effective June 13th

Haikou’s Status

Haikou’s relatively less severe closure status reflects its geographic position during Typhoon Wutip’s approach. The typhoon is forecast to make landfall between Sanya and Dongfang on Hainan’s southern coast, with Haikou in the northern part of the island experiencing less direct impact.

  • Students who remain on campus must have dedicated staff supervision
  • Schools must ensure basic living arrangements for any students unable to return home
  • 24-hour leadership and duty arrangements must be maintained

June 14th (Saturday): Overcast with heavy to torrential rain, temperatures 24-29°C

Wind speeds expected to reach 5-8 levels, with coastal areas experiencing 7-8 levels and gusts up to 9-10 levels

Recovery Timeline

Kindergartens in Haikou will remain closed until the typhoon yellow warning is lifted and safety conditions are restored. The provincial guidelines require that schools can only reopen when meteorological departments lift the corresponding warning levels and ensure that water, electricity, communications, and road access are all functioning normally.

Based on the typhoon’s projected path, normal operations are expected to resume after the weekend, likely by Monday, June 16th, pending weather condition assessments.
