How Strong Is Topical Storm Wutip? Projected Intensity and Classification

Tropical Storm Wutip is projected to reach wind speeds of 25 to 33 meters per second (m/s), which corresponds to Beaufort scale levels 10 to 12. According to the Beaufort scale:

  • Level 10 (“Storm”): 24.5–28.4 m/s (89–102 km/h)
  • Level 11 (“Violent Storm”): 28.5–32.6 m/s (103–117 km/h)
  • Level 12 (“Hurricane-force”): ≥32.7 m/s (≥118 km/h)

This means Wutip is expected to reach the threshold between a “violent storm” and “hurricane-force” on the Beaufort scale, which is considered a significant and dangerous level of wind intensity.

Comparison to Typical Typhoon Strengths

  • The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and other regional agencies classify a “typhoon” as a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of at least 33 m/s (about 119 km/h).
  • A “severe tropical storm” has winds of 25–32 m/s (90–117 km/h).

Wutip’s projected winds of 25–33 m/s place it at the upper end of a severe tropical storm and on the threshold of a typhoon by international standards.

Recent Official Assessments

As of June 11, 2025, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) and other agencies have classified Wutip as a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 64.8 km/h and peak gusts of 90 km/h. However, projections suggest possible further intensification as it approaches southern China, potentially reaching typhoon strength.

Forecasters note that while Wutip is expected to remain a tropical storm, there is a possibility of it reaching typhoon status if conditions allow, but rapid intensification into a “major” typhoon is considered unlikely at this stage.

Wutip’s Projected Strength

ClassificationWind Speed (m/s)Beaufort LevelDescription
Severe Tropical Storm25–3210–11Storm/Violent Storm
Typhoon Threshold3312Hurricane-force

Wutip’s projected wind speeds (25–33 m/s) mean it is on the border between a severe tropical storm and a minimal typhoon.

While not among the most intense typhoons (which can exceed 50 m/s), it is still a significant and potentially damaging storm, especially for coastal areas.

If it reaches the upper end of the projected wind speeds (33 m/s), Wutip will qualify as a minimal typhoon. This is still a “big” storm by general standards, capable of causing damage and disruption, particularly in vulnerable coastal regions.
