“Our Expression” – Li Ethnic Plant Dye & Rattan Weaving Art Exhibition in Hainan

“Our Expression” presents the traditional craftsmanship of the Li ethnic community from Maodao Township, Wuzhishan. The exhibition focuses on plant dyeing and rattan weaving, both deeply rooted in Li culture.

Visitors can experience how these ancient crafts are being preserved, adapted, and reimagined in collaboration with contemporary artists and designers. The works of 15 Li women artisans are showcased alongside pieces from 25 guest artists, blending heritage with modern creativity.

This exhibition is designed to engage sight, touch, and even scent — offering a fully immersive experience of Li craftsmanship.

Workshops: Learn Plant Dyeing & Rattan Weaving

Dates: June 21–22

Times: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (two sessions daily: morning and afternoon)

Capacity: 50 participants per session (25 for plant dyeing, 25 for rattan weaving)

Cost: Free with registration. On-site walk-ins allowed if space permits (¥25 per person, per activity).

How to Register: Via the official WeChat accounts of “Hainan Provincial Cultural Center” (Search 海南省文化馆 in WeChat) or “Fenghuang Maodao Hemu Li Township” (Search 凤凰毛道合亩黎乡in WeChat).

Sharing Session: Meet the Artisans

Dates: June 21–22

Content: Hear directly from the Li artisans and curators about the journey behind this exhibition. Includes a Q&A session.

Location: First floor, same as the exhibition.

Bonus: Attendees may receive a free commemorative booklet “Our Expression” (while supplies last).

Post about the exhibition on Xiaohongshu, WeChat Moments, Douyin, or other platforms (with text plus at least 6 photos or video).

Fashion Display: Nature’s Attire

Throughout the exhibition period, a dedicated section displays plant-dyed and rattan-crafted garments, merging traditional Li techniques with contemporary fashion design.

This is a static display integrated into the exhibition, no scheduled runway shows after June 22.

  • Walk in any day from now until July 14, 2025, during open hours.
  • For workshops and talks on June 21–22, pre-registration is recommended.

Between now and July 14, “Our Expression” offers an authentic, hands-on opportunity to explore the artistry and culture of the Li ethnic community. The upcoming interactive workshops on June 21–22 are a rare chance to learn plant dyeing and rattan weaving directly from the artisans.
