Haikou Urban Art Week: Events and Highlights for the National Holiday

If you’re in Hainan for the National Holiday, make sure to check out Haikou Urban Art Week from September 30th to October 10th. Whether you’re an art lover or just looking for something fun to do, this event offers a wide variety of exhibitions, performances, and hands-on activities that showcase both traditional and contemporary Chinese art. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect and when to catch it.

Key Highlights of the Week:

1. Traditional Chinese Art Exhibitions

For fans of classical art, the “畅神·大干气象” exhibition will feature renowned Chinese painters showcasing their work at the Haikou Exhibition Center (Hall 1). Running daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, this exhibition is a great opportunity to dive into traditional Chinese painting styles.

2. Cultural Heritage and Fashion Shows

Don’t miss the “锦色” (Brocade Colours), exhibition, which highlights the colorful heritage of China’s ethnic minorities through their traditional clothing. Head to the Haikou Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall (海口非遗文化展示馆) from 9 AM to 9 PM to discover their intricate designs.

For those interested in fashion with a modern twist, on October 3rd (3:30 PM – 5:30 PM), there’s a special talk on “The Modern Interpretation of Ethnic Minority Fashion” at the Haikou Exhibition Center.

3. Music and Performances

The evenings of October 1st to October 10th are packed with outdoor performances and concerts. Kick off the celebrations on October 1st at 8 PM with the China Symphony Orchestra performing at the Hainan Provincial Song and Dance Theatre (海南省歌舞剧院). If you prefer something more relaxed, head over to Century Park for the 2024 Lawn Concert starting at 7 PM, also on October 1st.

Throughout the week, expect to catch various street performances on Qilou Old Street, with street artists performing daily from 4 PM to 6 PM. These performances bring an added energy to the historic streets of Haikou.

4. Family-Friendly Activities

Families will have plenty to do as well. On October 4th (9:30 AM – 12 PM), there will be a creative handicraft workshop for kids at the Haikou Exhibition Center. Later in the day, you can join the parent-child painting class from 3:30 PM – 6 PM.
