According to the Hainan provincial transport department a new scenic tourism highway around the island is due to begin construction in the first half of 2019.
It is reported that there will be 46 tourism stations dotted along the 1,040 km dual lane highway, about one fifth of which will afford tourists scenic ocean views.
It is to be constructed with a series of high-tech capabilities, such as GPS positioning and big data, in order to realize the aim of building a modern and “smart” road with intelligent management and real-time monitoring.
Lin Dong, director of the department said that the highway will connect 12 cities and counties in Hainan and will be built according to existing topography, with consideration for the protection of plants and cultural landscapes.
