“The college’s purpose is to provide young people with an environment where a student can both learn and grow,” said Fu Xuanguo, Party chief of Hainan University.
The modern college system, as a new type of student management mode, inherits the old tradition of studying morals and professional knowledge at the same time, ensuring that lessons are appropriate for the student’s abilities, and incorporates the advantages of a “tutor system, course selection system” based on western colleges.
“The modern college system has characteristics such as systematic organization, professional tutor guidance, diverse accommodation functions, systematic general education, enrichment of the second classroom, and community services for students,” HNU President Luo Qingming said.
Luo further stated that the modern college system will assist in breaking the barriers of imbalanced development of college students’ comprehensive abilities in the new era, insufficient communication between teachers and students, and a lack of tailored instruction.
HNU focuses on teaching to satisfy the needs of national development strategies as well as the economic and social growth of Hainan. As a result of HNU’s educational orientation, the campus must focus on developing top-tier talent for the growth of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
HNU’s modern college reform can better integrate general and professional education, as well as satisfy the needs of the campus in terms of developing innovative and compound talents.
This reform aims to ensure the “individualization” of talent education, to build the college into a homeland for students to grow independently and provide a free space for teachers and students to communicate, and bring up characteristic high-quality innovative talents.
HNU has developed 15 physical colleges, which are home to the school’s more than 40,000 undergraduates, graduate students, and overseas students.
The renovation of 330 accommodations, which cover an area of more than 70,000 square meters, has begun on campus. There are plans to construct functional rooms such as student self-study rooms, teacher-student seminar rooms, career counseling rooms, community activity rooms, as well as one-stop service halls, and other common spaces for instructors and students to use for free. HNU will continue to innovate its student management system and talent training system in the future, with the goal of becoming a talent training hub for the Hainan Free Trade Port.
