Juren waterfall in Lingao

Juren Waterfall, recently designated as a national 2A-level tourist attraction, and a key Scenic spot in Lingao County, is the second site to receive this accolade after Lingao Liberation Park.

Located west of Juren Village in Huangtong Town, Juren Waterfall is celebrated for its picturesque “Three Pools and Nine Bends.” The waterfall is a natural phenomenon, formed by a sudden 20-meter drop in the relatively flat landscape, creating a cascade that flows down a rugged cliff. Depending on the season, the waterfall can appear like a fine mist or thunder down in a spectacular display, earning it the nickname “Ancient Silver Falls.”

Seasonal Beauty: When to Visit

The appearance of Juren Waterfall shifts dramatically throughout the year, making it an intriguing destination no matter the season. During the rainy months from June to October (and this year into November), the waterfall reaches its peak, with powerful torrents plunging from the cliffs, creating a sound that can be heard well before you see it. In the dry season, the falls take on a softer, more delicate appearance, with water flowing gently over the rocks.

For those wanting to see the waterfall at its most dramatic, now is the ideal time to visit. However, early mornings during the dry season offer a peaceful and less crowded experience, perfect for capturing photos without the usual crowds of tourists.

Getting There and What to Expect

Juren Waterfall is located about 80 kilometers west of Haikou. By car, it takes roughly an hour and twenty minutes to reach the falls. For travelers using public transport, the train from Haikou East to Lingao South is a convenient option. A quick 35 to 45-minute train ride costs around 30 yuan, and a short taxi ride from the station will bring you to the site.

In recent years, significant improvements have been made to enhance the visitor experience. The scenic area now boasts well-maintained roads, ample parking, a dedicated viewing platform, and a waterside boardwalk that allows you to get up close to the cascading waters. A short, one-kilometer trail leads from the parking area to the waterfall, winding through a mix of concrete steps and gravel paths.

Exploring the Surroundings

The area around Juren Waterfall offers more than just a view of the falls

A network of wooden pathways stretches downstream, making it easy to explore the smaller streams and rock pools that dot the landscape. These shallow pools, often no deeper than half a meter, are a refreshing spot for a dip during the hotter months.

If you have time, take a stroll along these paths to enjoy the lush greenery and quiet, scenic beauty of northern Hainan. On-site amenities include several small restaurants and shops. A local specialty, the Lingao roast suckling pig, is often prepared on a spit outside, offering a delicious taste of regional cuisine.

Tips for Visitors

Best Time to Visit: For a dramatic view, visit between June and October. For fewer crowds, early morning visits are ideal.

What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes for the trail, a camera for stunning waterfall shots, and swimwear if you plan to take a dip in the rock pools.

Local Delicacy: Don’t miss the chance to try Lingao’s roast suckling pig, a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

How to Get There: From Haikou, drive 80 km west or take a train to Lingao South, then a taxi to the waterfall.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a photographer, or simply looking for a peaceful getaway, this scenic spot in northern Hainan is well worth a visit.
