Registration Opens October 21 for the 2025 Qionghai Bo’ao Marathon

The countdown is on for one of Hainan’s most anticipated running events. The 2025 Qionghai Bo’ao Marathon, which also serves as the Bo’ao leg of China’s National Workers’ Marathon series, is set for Saturday, December 14 in scenic Qionghai. Organizers are expecting more than 10,000 runners, and registration officially opens on October 21.

The event marks the 100th anniversary of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions and aims to spotlight both the progress of the Hainan Free Trade Port and the natural and cultural charm of Qionghai. The theme this year: “The Chinese Dream, the Beauty of Labor, Running Toward a Better Life.”

What Makes This Marathon Special?

A Route That’s Pure Hainan

The full and half marathon courses are designed to show off the best of Qionghai, combining river views, modern infrastructure, and cultural landmarks. The race kicks off at the Qionghai Cultural and Sports Centre, winds along Wanquan River Road, cuts through the Bo’ao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, and crosses Lecheng Bridge. Runners will also get a taste of the Hainan Island Ring Road, before finishing at the iconic Bo’ao Forum for Asia International Conference Center.

A Marathon With a Medical Edge

A major stretch of the course runs through Bo’ao Lecheng, China’s only officially designated medical special zone. The area is home to 38 top-tier medical institutions, many offering cutting-edge services in sports rehabilitation, health diagnostics, and regenerative medicine.

Post-run perk: Runners can book recovery sessions like muscle injury therapy, anti-aging treatment, or in-depth body assessments, all delivered with international medical standards.

Foodie Paradise Meets Finish Line

If there’s one thing Qionghai runners rave about besides the scenery, it’s the local food. Race day is also a culinary experience. This is the hometown of Jiaji Duck, one of Hainan’s “Four Famous Dishes” — think crispy skin, tender meat, and rich, savory flavor. Also on the menu: Hot Spring Goose, loved for its juicy but not greasy texture.

Local street food gets its moment, too.

Keep an eye out for:

Jishi Vine jelly – a sweet herbal dessert with a cult following

Crispy sorghum rolls – a nostalgic snack packed with local flavor

Fresh seafood – caught and served just hours before it hits your plate

During the Marathon Carnival, food stalls and cultural exhibits will let runners and visitors explore Qionghai’s street food scene and culinary roots up close.
