Xintan natural cold spring Haikou

You may have heard of Hainan’s natural hot springs but did you know there are also cold springs on the island? One notable mention would be the Jiuwentang village cold spring in Ding’an, but if you don’t fancy the 80km ride from Haikou, we’ve found something a little closer to home.

The Xintan cold spring of Nanyang village committee lies around 20km to the south of Haikou city. The natural spring is connected to a 100 acre lotus pond which flows out into a small tributary of the Nandu River.

For generations it has been popular with local residents. More recently it has since gained fame on social media platforms such as Small Red Book and Douyin as the hot place to ‘Check in’. Local cycling groups also stop at the spring on their rides out of Haikou city for a quick dip to cool down.

The spring was originally a source of drinking water for the villagers. Since tap water was installed however, it has become known a good place for the villagers to bathe, wash and cool down during the hotter summer days.

The cold water is continually replenished from a natural underground spring, which keeps the 100 acre lotus pond topped with crystal clear water. According to locals in the area, lotus grown in natural spring water is rare and can sell for a much higher price.

The spring can be a little tricky to find, copy and paste 王居正墓 (wang zhuzheng mu) directly into Baidu maps and it will give you an accurate location. The spring is located to the south of Xintan village.

If you are taking the bus, then take no. 46. You’ll then need to walk around 1.9km south to reach the spring.
