A three-day car fair in Haikou from 13 to 15 November is advertising cash discounts of 1,000 to 5,000 yuan for staff at Hainan’s kindergartens, schools and universities, Haikou Daily reported.
The event, billed as the first Hainan Province Teachers’ Car-Buying Festival (海南省首届教师购车节), is organised by the Haikou Automobile Circulation Association (海口市汽车流通协会) and will be held at Century Park in Haikou. The newspaper published the plans on 2 November, citing the Haikou Municipal Bureau of Commerce. China News Service’s Hainan site carried the same report.
According to the report, more than 40 exhibitors will take part: conventional-fuel carmakers, new-energy brands, used-car dealers, and banks and insurers. The site will have three zones, for carmakers’ displays, used-car trade-ins and finance and insurance. Saloons, SUVs, MPVs and commuter runabouts will be on show.
Who qualifies
The offers are aimed at serving staff of public and private kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, secondary vocational schools and universities in Hainan. That includes teachers holding formal posts within the official staffing quota (在编) and those on contracts, staff of the education administration and teachers’ direct relatives. The report does not define which relatives count.
Besides the teacher-only cash discounts on all models, the organisers list what they call triple trade-in upgrade subsidies (三重置换升级补贴), zero-interest finance plans, after-sales perks and gift packs. Several of the offers can be combined, the report said.
A promised price guarantee
According to the report, the fair will run a “pay more, get the difference back” mechanism (买贵补差), and the organiser will supervise exhibitors throughout and act against mark-ups, shrinking discounts and forced bundled purchases. Consumer mediators are to be on site to handle disputes, and a dedicated service record is to be kept to follow up after-sales complaints.
What the report leaves out
The report gives no opening hours or entry arrangements, and does not say how staff will prove they qualify. Nor does it say whether foreign nationals employed as teachers in Hainan are covered.
Foreign nationals working as teachers should first check with the organisers or a participating dealer whether they are eligible. All buyers should ask what proof of employment or family relationship is needed, and get the discount and finance terms in writing before signing.
Century Park sits where Haikou Bay meets the mouth of the Haidian River, with the Century Bridge passing over part of it. The fair opens there on Friday 13 November and closes on Sunday 15 November.
