Temperatures in northern Hainan, including Haikou, could drop to 22–25°C during the day from 10 to 12 November.
In a forecast released on 6 November, the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Bureau said cold air would bring lower temperatures across the island from 7 to 13 November. In Haikou, daytime highs could fall below 25°C.
The bureau forecast two rounds of cold air across China between 4 and 9 November. Temperatures in much of the country are expected to reach their lowest levels since early July, with South China reaching that point on 9 and 10 November.
China Weather Network said Haikou and Guangzhou were among the cities where daily high temperatures could rise and fall by 8–11°C.
Temperatures from 9 to 12 November
The bureau gave the following forecasts:
9 November: Daytime highs of 24–26°C north of the Wuzhi Mountains and 27–30°C elsewhere. Overnight lows of 16–18°C in the central and western hills, and 18–22°C in other areas.
10–12 November: Daytime highs of 22–25°C north of the Wuzhi Mountains and 25–28°C elsewhere. Overnight temperatures should remain about the same.
Heavy rain forecast for 7–9 and 13 November
Moderate to heavy rain is expected across eastern Hainan from 7 to 9 November and again on 13 November, with torrential downpours in some places.
Western areas can expect showers or thunderstorms, with heavy to torrential rain in some locations.
The warning follows heavy to torrential rain across eastern Hainan on 2 and 3 November. The highest recorded rainfall was 186.2 millimetres in Sanya’s Haitang district.
The bureau advised checking reservoirs and areas at risk for geological hazards, including landslides, before the next round of rain.
Between 10 and 12 November, the weather should improve slightly. Eastern Hainan can expect cloudy skies with scattered showers or thunderstorms, while the west should be mostly cloudy with sunny spells.
Stronger winds expected at sea
Winds at sea are expected to strengthen from the night of 8 November.
From 7 November until the daytime of 8 November, winds in the Beibu Gulf and waters around Hainan are forecast at force 5, with gusts reaching force 6–7. During thunderstorms, gusts could reach force 8–9.
What residents and visitors should know
With temperatures falling, especially in the central and western hills where overnight lows could reach 16–18°C, the bureau advised people to wear extra layers at night.
It said this could help protect against colds and heart and circulatory illnesses.
Farmers growing winter melons and vegetables were advised to drain waterlogged fields, while rubber tappers should plan their work around the rain.
The bureau said the risk of forest fires caused by weather conditions would generally remain low or relatively low during the week.
However, on 9 and 10 November, the risk could rise to a relatively high level in parts of Danzhou, Baisha, Changjiang, Dongfang, Ledong, Sanya and other areas.
Moderate to heavy rain, with torrential downpours in some places, is expected to return to eastern Hainan on 13 November, the final day covered by the bureau’s forecast.
