Rainforest coverage in Hainan Province is to stay above 62% according to new environmental protection regulation passed last month aimed at further improving Hainan’s environmental protection and turning Hainan province into a national showcase area for ecological conservation.
The impact of human activity on the local environment is to be limited by restricting market access according to specified environmental criteria. According to regulations, new buildings in rural areas cannot exceed the height of coconut trees and buildings in rural areas should fit in with the natural scenery.
Protection of marine ecology also came under the spotlight with systems to be drawn up which include designated responsible persons to ensure protection of all bay areas. Coastal areas and areas of high ecological sensitivity are also to receive increased protection.
