The 2024 Hainan Island Carnival Moves to Summer, kicks off in Haikou on June 16th

Over the past twenty years since the first Hainan Island Carnival opened in Haikou, the carnival has been held annually in either November or December. This year, however, the Hainan Island Carnival will open in Haikou on June 16th and close in Danzhou on the 22nd.

The rescheduling of the Carnival coincides with graduation season, aiming to attract graduates from schools and universities across the country to Hainan for their graduation trips.

During the carnival, a series of activities aim to bring together elements that are both family-friendly and distinctly Hainanese, such as the sea, rainforests, beaches, cuisine, electronic music, sports, intangible cultural heritage, performances, and children’s theater.

Events will include a children’s theater carnival, the 2024 Haikou Fitness Carnival, a heritage parade, and dance performances.

This year’s carnival activities will take place across the entire province with each city and county hosting complementary events that incorporate Hainan’s unique features of leisure, cultural heritage, and sports entertainment.

Events include Haikou’s “Romantic Coconut City” series, Ding’an’s Qiong Opera Carnival, Wenchang’s Coconut Culture activities, Qionghai’s health sports events, Wanning’s Water Carnival, Qiongzhong’s 2024 Women’s Super League, Danzhou’s Dragon Boat Festival series, and Sanya’s West Island Ecological Art events.

Over the years, the Hainan’s tourism market has developed a distinct pattern of peak and low seasons, with winter being busy and summer less so. Holding the carnival in the summer aims to help balance the peaks and troughs of tourist traffic, maintaining a relatively steady flow throughout the year.

Specific events will be posted here as dates and information are announced, so stay tuned!
