In a groundbreaking rescue operation during the Spring Festival holiday, a U SAFE robot lifebuoy played a critical role in saving three tourists from rough seas off the coast of Wanning, Hainan.

The Incident

The rescue occurred when three tourists were thrown into the sea after their recreational watercraft capsized amid strong winds and waves. Traditional rescue methods faced challenges due to the turbulent conditions, prompting local emergency teams and members of the Blue Sky Rescue (BSR) team to deploy the U SAFE robot lifebuoy.

Operated remotely, the device quickly reached the distressed individuals and enabled their safe recovery within minutes.

This marked one of the first instances where such high-tech equipment was used in Hainan for coastal rescues, demonstrating its effectiveness in challenging environments.

How the U SAFE Robot Works

The U SAFE robot lifebuoy is a state-of-the-art water rescue device designed and manufactured by Noras Performance in Portugal. It combines advanced features that make it ideal for emergency situations:

Self-Propelled Design: Equipped with dual turbines, it can reach speeds of up to 15 km/h, ensuring rapid response even in rough seas.

Remote Control: Operated from shore, it allows rescuers to navigate the device precisely without entering hazardous waters.

All-Weather Reliability: Activates automatically upon contact with water and functions effectively regardless of how it lands.

High Buoyancy: Capable of supporting up to 440 lbs (200 kg), enabling it to assist multiple victims simultaneously.

Lightweight and Durable: Built with corrosion-resistant materials, it is easy to deploy and reliable even in extreme conditions.

Hainan’s Integration of Advanced Technologies

While the U SAFE lifebuoy is a Portuguese innovation, its deployment in Hainan underscores Hainan’s growing emphasis on integrating cutting-edge technologies into its emergency response framework. This approach aligns with broader national goals to modernize disaster management systems through advanced tools like drones, AI, and smart devices.

China has increasingly adopted remote-controlled lifebuoys, including U-shaped designs like the U SAFE, as part of its efforts to enhance coastal safety. These devices are now being used not only in Hainan but also in other regions such as Fujian and Guangdong.

Implications for Emergency Response

Liu Jiao, a member of the BSR team involved in the rescue, noted that traditional methods often expose rescuers to significant risks. The use of remotely operated devices like the U SAFE lifebuoy mitigates these dangers while improving efficiency. This successful operation demonstrates how integrating new innovations can significantly enhance Hainan’s emergency response capabilities.
