Major Projects Worth 5.463 Billion Yuan Begin in Wenchang, Including Key Aerospace Initiatives

On October 9, Wenchang City in Hainan Province officially launched 34 major projects with a combined investment of 5.463 billion yuan (54.63亿元), approximately $770 million USD. The projects, part of the city’s second batch of 2024 initiatives, encompass industrial development, public services, and infrastructure. Among them, several aerospace-related projects reflect Wenchang’s growing role in China’s space industry.

  • Industrial development projects: 4.624 billion yuan (总投资46.24亿元)
  • Public service projects: 0.217 billion yuan (总投资2.17亿元)
  • Infrastructure projects: 0.622 billion yuan (总投资6.22亿元)

Key Aerospace and Industrial Projects

Of the 34 projects, 25 are dedicated to industrial development. This includes key initiatives within the Hainan Free Trade Port, such as the Wenchang International Aerospace City’s Rocket and Satellite Industry Cluster. Notable projects under this cluster include the Satellite Structural System Manufacturing Center and the iSpace Launch Vehicle Assembly, Testing, and Reuse Factory. In total, these industrial projects represent an investment of 4.624 billion yuan, with an annual planned investment of 1.472 billion yuan.

Additionally, other industrial initiatives include the Hainan Free Trade Port Meilan technology (美兰科) Auto Parts Remanufacturing International Industry Project and the second phase of the Hainan Fino Coconut Full-Industry-Chain Smart Green Factory. The Lutai (绿台) Aquatic Seed Breeding and Genetic Selection Project and Ningwan (宁湾) Technology’s Grouper Marine Aquaculture Project also contribute to Wenchang’s diverse industrial expansion.

Public Service and Infrastructure Investments

The batch also features four public service projects, with a total investment of 217 million yuan and an annual planned investment of 107 million yuan. These include the Wenchang International Aerospace and Aviation Science and Education City’s Fitness Center and the Xiadong (下东) Relocation Housing Construction Project in Wencheng Town. Additionally, the 2024 Old Residential Community Renovation Project aims to improve living conditions in the area.

Infrastructure projects play a crucial role in supporting this development. Five projects, with a total investment of 622 million yuan and an annual planned investment of 174 million yuan, include the Phase I Road Network Project at the Maihao (迈豪) Modern Logistics and Advanced Manufacturing Industrial Park. Also underway is the Power Facilities Supporting Project for the Fengjiawan (冯家湾) Modern Fishery Industrial Park.

Strategic Importance for Wenchang’s Growth

According to Wenchang Mayor Liu Chong, the city’s aerospace ambitions have entered a new phase with these projects. He emphasized that this latest wave of developments signals a pivotal moment for Wenchang, calling for coordinated efforts from local industrial parks, government departments, and townships to foster a supportive business environment. Liu encouraged stakeholders to seize the opportunity to attract and implement more significant projects that could drive further economic growth in the region. These new projects align with Wenchang’s broader strategic goals to position itself as a leader in aerospace, while also enhancing the region’s infrastructure and public services, ensuring sustainable development for years to come.
