Sanya: Watch Authentic Mongolian Song and Dance for Free on January 13 and 15

As part of the ongoing FTP Cultural and Art Season, the Inner Mongolia Art Theatre will bring its themed production Song Tour of Inner Mongolia , I Have an Appointment with the Grassland to Sanya this January.

Two free public performances are scheduled for January 13 and January 15, offering residents and visitors a chance to experience the sounds, stories, and movement of Mongolian traditional performing arts, without leaving the island.

The performances will take place at two of Sanya’s busiest public spaces, each offering a different atmosphere.

On January 13 at 7:00 pm, the opening show will be held at Lanhai Shopping Plaza (蓝海购物广场), where the rhythms of the grassland will unfold amid the energy of the city where listeners will be drawn into the powerful vocal traditions and expressive dance of Mongolian culture.

The second performance follows on January 15 at 7:00 pm at Haiyue Square (海月广场), overlooking Sanya Bay. Here, the music of the horsehead fiddle and the sweeping movements of the dancers will mingle with ocean air and palm trees, creating a rare contrast between grassland heritage and coastal scenery. Both performances are free and open to the public, with no reservations required.

The program brings together a wide range of vocal, instrumental, and dance pieces that reflect both the depth and variety of Mongolian performing arts. The evening opens with the song-and-dance piece Song of Praise, followed by vocal works such as Mongolian Horse, Chilê Song, Moni Mountain, Wine Song, and Swan Goose. Instrumental highlights include horsehead fiddle classics Reminiscence and Ten Thousand Horses Galloping.

Dance pieces range from solo works like Fragrant Milk Tea to group performances including The Might of Bokh, Golden Step Dance, and Elegance. The program also features Ode to the Camel, performed using traditional throat singing.

Together, these pieces present a portrait of Mongolian life that moves between strength and lyricism, celebration and reflection. Themes of home, tradition, and the natural world run throughout the performance, conveyed through layered vocals, rhythmic movement, and distinctive instruments.

The Inner Mongolia Art Theatre is known for its long-standing commitment to preserving and developing Mongolian cultural traditions. Over the years, its works have received awards at events such as the North China Five Provinces and Municipalities Dance Competition, the China Mongolian Dance Competition, and the International Mongolian Dance Art Exhibition. Several productions have also been selected for the Autonomous Region’s Five-One Project Award. This background gives the Sanya performances a strong foundation in both artistic quality and cultural authenticity.

The Inner Mongolia program follows earlier performances from Tieling and marks just one stage of the wider Cultural and Art Season. In the coming weeks, additional art troupes from provinces including Gansu, Hebei, and Henan are also scheduled to appear in Sanya, each bringing their own regional traditions and styles.

This January, Sanya offers more than sunshine and sea views. With the arrival of I Have an Appointment with the Grassland, audiences are invited to step into a different landscape, one shaped by open plains, resonant voices, and centuries-old artistic expression, right in the heart of the city.
