Exploring Opportunities: Interview with Ireland’s Ambassador to China at Hainan Expo 2024

Ireland boasts a significant presence at the China (Hainan) International Consumer Products Expo in Haikou, where it holds the position of guest of honour. The Irish pavilion is currently showcasing a diverse range of offerings, including food and drink, healthcare, fashion, and technology firms, as well as various state bodies.

According to Ireland’s ambassador to China Ann Derwin, the Hainan Expo serves as a platform for Irish companies to explore opportunities in the Chinese market, with a focus on making connections and securing initial orders.

Participants have expressed optimism about the potential for business growth, particularly in light of Hainan’s development as a free trade port with favourable conditions for business.

Several Irish entrepreneurs and business representatives have noted China’s increasing emphasis on quality alongside competitive pricing, presenting opportunities for collaboration and growth.

The expo also provides a forum for Ireland to strengthen its position as a hub for Chinese technology companies in Europe. The friendly relations between Ireland and China, combined with Ireland’s strengths in areas such as ICT, pharmaceuticals, and AI, make it an attractive destination for Chinese investment and collaboration.

For some exhibitors, establishing a physical presence in China is crucial for building trust and providing support to Chinese partners. This move is seen as essential for winning new business and fostering long-term relationships in the Chinese market.

Events like the China (Hainan) International Consumer Products Expo underscores the importance for fostering trade relations between Ireland and China and the opportunities they present for mutual growth and collaboration.
