Hainan December Weather: Cold Temperatures, Low Rainfall, and High Tides

Extreme Lowest Temperatures Across Hainan Island May Reach 9°C in December

As December rolls in, Hainan Island is set to experience some interesting weather conditions, offering a brief break from its usual tropical warmth. According to a recent report from several local agencies, the extreme lowest temperatures across the island could dip to between 9.0°C and 14.0°C.

Temperature Forecast: A Cooler December

The average temperature in most parts of Hainan is expected to be slightly lower than usual, by about 0.1°C to 0.5°C. In the more southern and coastal areas, such as Sanya, Lingshui, and the Xisha and Nansha Islands, temperatures will range between 21.5°C and 25.5°C, which is still quite pleasant for outdoor activities. The northern and central areas of the island will see slightly cooler temperatures, ranging from 18.0°C to 21.0°C.

Rainfall: Less than Usual

In terms of rainfall, Hainan will see significantly lower-than-usual precipitation this month. Places like Wanning, Qionghai, and Qiongzhong are expecting between 60mm and 100mm. Other areas will likely see just 10mm to 60mm of rain. Overall, rainfall across the island is expected to be 20% to 50% lower than usual, with the heaviest rainfall predicted for mid-to-late December.

Giant Waves and Tides

For those planning to visit Hainan’s coastal areas, the seas may present some dramatic conditions. Strong cold air is expected to cause large to giant waves in the northern and central South China Sea. The island could experience giant waves due to the combined effect of storms and cold air, which could make for rough seas, but good surfing conditions.

Hainan’s coastal areas will also experience two high tide events later this month. The highest astronomical tides will occur between December 13–20, and December 30–31, with particularly high water levels expected in Haikou’s Xiuying, Dongfang’s Basuo, Qionghai’s Bo’ao, Wenchang’s Qinglan, and Ledong’s Yinggehai.

So, if you’re planning a trip around Hainan this December, expect cooler weather, dry days, and the possibility of large waves along the coast. A perfect time for those who enjoy a more peaceful, less humid side of the island!
