On Saturday, a group of 25 hikers found themselves lost and trapped in the Diaoluoshan forest area of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. By Sunday morning, 24 of the individuals had been successfully rescued, with two suffering injuries and one fatality reported.
The emergency unfolded when the local fire rescue brigade in Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County received a distress call. The hikers were reported trapped near Maohui village in Shiling town, within the Diaoluoshan forest area.
Rescue Operation
Following an intense night of search and rescue efforts, the team managed to transfer 24 of the hikers to the rescue command centre by 8:30 am on Sunday. The two injured hikers were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Tragically, a 45-year-old woman who had fallen and sustained severe injuries did not survive. She succumbed to intracranial haemorrhage and internal organ bleeding caused by the fall.
Group Details and Incident Cause
The hiking group, organized spontaneously through an online platform, entered the Diaoluoshan forest area on foot from Diaoluoshan township in Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County. They became trapped due to the area’s complex terrain and poor communication signals.
Of the 24 survivors, 23 have returned to Haikou, one individual remains hospitalised with a transverse lumbar process fracture but is in stable condition. The rescue operation has now concluded.

The incident has sparked discussions on social media platforms like Weibo, where some users have called for a halt to such unprofessional outdoor activities.
In response, the Hubei fire department posted a reminder emphasising the dangers of hiking and exploring wilderness areas. “Always pay attention to changes in the surrounding environment, do not take unnecessary risks and know your limits,” the post advised.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in outdoor adventures and the importance of proper preparation and respect for nature.
