Hainan Island’s Major Airports Set to Surpass Pre-Epidemic Levels During May Day Holiday

Hainan Island’s tourism industry is set to soar once again, as the region’s three major airports prepare to transport a total of 686,700 passengers during the upcoming “May Day” holiday. The announcement came from Hainan Airport Group on April 26th, which revealed that Haikou Meilan International Airport, Sanya Phoenix International Airport, and Qionghai Boao Airport will all experience a surge in passenger flow during the five-day holiday period from April 29 to May 3.

The three airports are expected to handle approximately 4,425 flight movements during this time, resulting in a passenger throughput of around 686,700. This represents an impressive year-on-year increase of 20.7% and 21.7% respectively, exceeding the levels seen before the epidemic.

Haikou Meilan International Airport, in particular, is gearing up for a busy holiday period, with approximately 2,445 flights expected to transport around 343,700 passengers. This translates to an average of 489 flights per day, carrying around 68,700 passengers per day. Compared to 2019 figures, this represents an increase of 15.33% and 11.75%, respectively, with May 3 anticipated to be the busiest day, with a projected 72,900 passengers.

Meanwhile, Sanya Phoenix International Airport is also expected to handle a significant volume of passengers, with around 1,900 passenger flights taking off and landing during the holiday period. This will transport approximately 333,000 passengers, with an average daily increase of 23.4% and 30.8% year-on-year compared to 2019, and an average daily flight volume of 380 sorties. The peak day for passenger volume is expected to be April 30, with an estimated 68,000 passengers expected to pass through the airport.
