Hainan Welcomes Foreigners with New Six-Day Visa-Free Policy via Hong Kong and Macao

Hainan’s recent introduction of a six-day visa-free policy for foreign tour groups entering from Hong Kong and Macao is expected to attract a substantial influx of tourists to the island. Effective from August 2024, the policy allows visitors from countries with diplomatic relations with China to stay visa-free in Hainan for up to 144 hours, (6 days), provided they join a tour group registered in the Hong Kong or Macao special administrative regions, as announced by the National Immigration Administration.

Enhancing Tourist Experience with Improved Customs Procedures

To enhance the experience for inbound tourists, Hainan is optimising customs procedures and enriching its tourism offerings. The island has already implemented advanced biometric data collection equipment at its international airports in Haikou, Sanya, Bo’ao, and other locations, significantly reducing customs clearance times.

Upgraded Facilities at Haikou Meilan International Airport

Haikou Meilan International Airport, verification channels have increased from eight to 18, and fast lanes have expanded from six to 24.

Surge in Tourist Arrivals

The island welcomed nearly 500,000 inbound tourists in the first half of this year, marking a year-on-year increase of over 251 percent. This summer, Hainan has emerged as a popular destination for residents of Hong Kong and Macao, as well as international tourists. Air passenger trips between Hong Kong and Hainan have risen by nearly 40 percent compared to last year.

Customized Tourism Products to Meet Diverse Needs

To cater to the diverse needs of tourists, Hainan has launched over 20 customized tourism products and routes tailored to the new visa-free policy including flights connecting Hong Kong or Macao to Sanya, along with various hotel accommodation.

The ‘Hawaii of China’: Hainan’s Natural Appeal

Often referred to as the ‘Hawaii of China,’ Hainan is renowned for its coconut palms, white sandy beaches, clear waters, and ideal surfing conditions. The island’s year-round tropical climate and natural beauty make it an attractive destination for tourists seeking a quiet getaway.

Visa-Free Travel Conditions

Under the new policy, passport holders from 183 countries can visit Hainan for up to 144 hours without needing a visa. The only stipulation is that visitors must be part of a tour group organized by a legally registered travel agency in Hong Kong or Macao, and the groups must consist of at least two people. Tourists can enter and exit Hainan through any of its entry points, ensuring a seamless travel experience.
