Max McGreevy looking to extend Order of Merit lead at Haikou Classic

PRESS RELEASE —American Max McGreevy is looking to extend his lead on the PGA TOUR Series-China Order of Merit at the Haikou Classic this week. Coming into the Tour’s 11th event of the season, McGreevy has been incredibly consistent, recording seven top-10s, including one victory, at the weather-shortened Guangzhou Open. He leads the Order of Merit with RMB 871,523, just over RMB 100,000 more than fellow American Trevor Sluman.

With four events left in the season, McGreevy is eager to try and earn another winner’s check this week at the tropical Mission Hills Haikou resort, which would help distance himself from the rest of the challengers hoping to close the gap on the money list.

“This event is really important to me. I don’t want to wait until the last event to try and secure the No. 1 spot, so hopefully I can get it done earlier and would be great to get another win this week as the season is coming into crunch time.”

Locking up the No. 1 spot on the Order of Merit at the conclusion of the season would guarantee McGreevy starts for every event on the 2020 Korn Ferry Tour. He is also excited about the possibility of joining former University of Oklahoma teammate and the Tour’s all-time money-list leader, Charlie Saxon, in the U.S.

“I’m living with Charlie now, and I got to see him which was nice. He was pretty encouraging for me and he’s a good person to talk to,” said McGreevy, who graduated from OU in 2017, one year after Saxon. “He’s a couple years older and wiser than me, so he’s been very helpful to me in my first few years of professional golf so far.”

Although living with Saxon in Dallas, McGreevy is originally from Oklahoma, where he spent the Tour’s off weeks training. He even managed to net a nice bonus sum of USD $10,000 by winning the 2019 Oklahoma Open.

“I took a couple weeks off, which was nice to recharge the batteries, but I also played a state open in Oklahoma, which was kind of in my backyard so it was nice to stay at home and have my parents watch me, and I actually ended up winning it,” said McGreevy. “So I was getting some practice in and got a nice win over the break too so just gaining more confidence and getting ready for this last stretch.”
