Tropical Depression Expected to Bring Heavy Rain to Hainan, August 16–18

At this time of year, tropical systems regularly develop in the South China Sea, which bring heavy rain and strong winds to Hainan. Meteorologists are currently tracking a disturbance over the central South China Sea that is expected to strengthen into a tropical depression around August 17, with impacts expected across the island.

Land Forecast

August 16–18:

Eastern Hainan: Heavy to torrential rainfall is expected.

Western Hainan: Moderate to heavy rain, with some areas likely to see localized downpours.

Temperatures: Daytime highs across the island will range from 29°C to 33°C.

August 19–22:

Conditions will improve, with the island seeing mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies.

North of the Wuzhishan Mountains: Isolated afternoon thunderstorms may develop, occasionally bringing short bursts of heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning.

South of Wuzhishan: Scattered showers or thunderstorms remain possible.

Temperatures: Warmer, with highs between 32°C and 35°C.

Marine Forecast

August 16–18:

Winds are expected to strengthen around Hainan’s coastal waters, the Xisha Islands, and the Beibu Gulf, reaching Force 6–7 (39–61 km/h), with gusts up to Force 8–9.

Waters near the Zhongsha and Nansha Islands will see slightly lower winds, Force 5–6, with gusts up to Force 7–8.

August 19–22:

Winds will ease slightly to around Force 5 with gusts at Force 6.

During thunderstorms, gusts could temporarily increase to Force 7–8.

Advisories from the Hainan Meteorological Service

Local authorities are recommending precautionary measures in response to the approaching system:

Marine activities: Fishing vessels and offshore operations in the central and northern South China Sea should closely monitor updates and adjust schedules to avoid hazardous conditions.

Urban areas: Cities and towns are advised to manage road traffic in flood-prone areas, ensure safety around tourist facilities, and monitor sites at risk of landslides or other geological hazards.

Agriculture: Farmers are encouraged to drain excess water from rice fields and vegetable plots, take measures to control pests and diseases, and adjust rubber tapping schedules to avoid latex washout from heavy rain. Fruit growers are advised to spray orchards promptly to help prevent plant disease and insect infestations.
