Where locals like to eat: Back alley river crabs in Haikou

In business for over ten years, the restaurant has captured the hearts of locals with a variety of spicy river snacks soaked in their signature hot sauce. If you want to go where the locals like to eat then this is the place for you.

Average price per person: 25 yuan

Business hours: 11:00-14:00

Location: 海甸岛二东路人民东里29号(导航小巷荣姐炸炸麻辣烫) No. 29, Renmin East Li, 2nd east road, Haidian Island

The shop is located on Renmin East Lane and it’s easy to find, just look for this sign.

The store front is easy to recognise

Outside there is a small wooden table loaded with Pippi shrimps (mantis shrimp), crabs, crayfish, pork, chicken feet, pig’s feet and pickled vegetables. All of the dishes are locally raised and grown in Haikou.

The river crabs are quite small but they have a surprising amount of meat considering their size. The meat is also very soft and soaked in homemade spices.

The snails are also cooked in the restaurant’s signature spicy sauce, unlike most places serving snails these are already pulled from the shell, so there’s no need to fiddle about with a toothpick.

The restaurant has attracted a wide range of customers from near and far over the years. Most days, the food can be sold out in a few hours, and once it’s gone…….it’s gone!

If you’ve ever wanted to try some local Hainan dishes without the frills and higher price tag a tourist hotspot offers then this place is definitely worth a try.
