World’s First Commercial Small Modular Reactor Unloaded in Hainan

The Linglong One, the world’s first commercial small modular reactor, reached a significant milestone as its core module was unloaded at the Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant dock in Hainan. The reactor’s arrival in Hainan follows the core module’s successful factory acceptance test in Dalian, Liaoning province, showcasing a technological expertise in small modular reactor innovation and nuclear power construction on a global scale.

The Linglong One, an advanced solution for energy needs

Sun Hua, assistant to the general manager of Hainan Nuclear Power Co, described the core module as the “small, movable charger of the nuclear power plant,” integrating vital components such as pressure vessels and evaporators. The Linglong One, a multipurpose small modular pressurized water reactor developed with independent intellectual property rights, is designed as an advanced solution for energy needs in various scenarios, including electricity generation, urban heating, and seawater desalination.

Compared to traditional large reactors, the Linglong One’s integrated core module streamlines the installation process, significantly reducing construction time and costs. Chen Jianxin, chief engineer of Hainan Nuclear Power Co, emphasized that the reactor’s integrated design allows for hydraulic pressure tests to be conducted upon module receipt, further enhancing efficiency.

The Linglong One, to begin commercial operation by the end of 2025

The Linglong One’s construction commenced in July 2021, and it is projected to begin commercial operation by the end of 2025. Once operational, it will generate 1 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually, meeting the electricity needs of 526,000 households. Additionally, its sustainable power generation will reduce 880,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and contribute to Hainan Province’s goal of becoming a national ecological civilization pilot zone and clean energy island, supporting China’s carbon peak and carbon neutrality objectives.

Highlighting the reactor’s safety features, Yang Junhua, deputy director of the civil engineering department of Hainan Nuclear Power Co, underscored the adoption of a sunken design for the core module, minimizing the risk of leakage even in extreme scenarios.

The small modular reactor holds potential for international deployment, serving applications such as floating platforms and nuclear-powered ships, which could foster China’s nuclear power technology expansion to the international market.

As China looks to position Hainan as a free trade port by 2025, the Linglong One will play a crucial role in providing clean, low-carbon, and stable nuclear power to support the province’s expanding business ecosystem. With its array of advantages, including high safety standards, flexible deployment, and rapid manufacturing cycle, the Linglong One represents a ground breaking step towards a sustainable and technologically advanced future in energy production.
